Los Angeles weather is classified as Dry-Summer Subtropical, falling just short of the warm semi-arid type, thanks to enough annual precipitation. Although located in Southern California, Los Angeles weather shares more than a few characteristics with the overall Mediterranean area: in the city of angels, sunshine is abundant, the summers are sunny and dry, and the winters somewhat wet and mild.
In comparison to the inland region, the areas closer to the Pacific Ocean remain cooler in summer and warmer in winter thanks to the impact of the warm, moist Pacific air. Differences in weather conditions between the two areas are so great; it’s not uncommon for the inland to be as much as 18 °F (10 °C) warmer than the coastal areas.
Frequently a dense cloud cover - created by the area’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean- hovers over the coastal region; known as the "marine layer" this unique phenomenon helps Los Angeles weather retain a significantly cooler disposition. During the months of May and June, the layer becomes more common and spreads through the inland areas; locals call this phenomenon either May Gray or June Gloom.
Although LA’s summer temperatures tend to reach highs of 82 °F (27 °C) during the day, they can occasionally soar to well over 90 °F (32 °C). Nights are significantly cooler, with temperatures dipping to lows of 63 °F (17 °C). August and July are the hottest months of the season.
During the winter season, Los Angeles weather becomes colder, although mildly so. Average daytime temperatures reach highs of 65 °F (18 °C) and lows of 48 °F (10 °C). January median temperature in January is 57 °F (13 °C).m while storms of varying severity are also a possibility.
Los Angeles annual precipitation averages 15 inches (381.00 mm, most of it occurring during the spring and winter seasons. Precipitation usually takes the form of light rain showers, although occasionally it tends to change into heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. February is the wettest month of the year, and the inland areas receive significantly more rainfalls than the coast. Although the mountains within city limit experience snowfall during winter, the city’s basin remains largely snow-free.
